Dr. Jason Warr will challenges the notion of rehabilitation as a public good, with its argument centred on a simple point: that the public conception of rehabilitation is distinct and different from the conception that exists in Criminal Justice settings. There, ‘rehabilitation’ is concerned with creating structures and processes of control. The concept of rehabilitation becomes a mask, a smokescreen, for the implementation of punitive and disciplinary actions designed to produce compliance, not growth.

Dr. Warr is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Criminal Justice at De Montfort University with research interests in penology, sociology of power and the philosophy of science. He has conducted research in a number of criminal justice settings and has written on the emotional geographies of prison, the pains of imprisonment, and narrative criminology.
