Young Women and 'Worklessness': A Family Portrait

Playfair Library, Edinburgh

Presenting an in-depth case study from her research in the post-industrial Docklands of Bermondsey, Gillian explains the factors that are likely to lead young women who are living in certain kinds of predominantly working class urban neighbourhoods, to find themselves classified as ‘workless’. She relates these factors to broader social, economic and political changes in Britain over the last thirty years and describes how young women living in profoundly difficult circumstances can find themselves vulnerable to the destructive effects of crime.
